Dear faithful of the Archdiocese of Saint-Boniface,
In the more than 200 years since the foundation of the first church at Saint Boniface, our past has been storied with the service of sincere and dedicated priests. And since 2017, the life of the Church in our diocese has been greatly enriched by the nine priests ordained here. And its future continues to be assured, thanks to the seven seminarians from Canada, Congo, India and Vietnam that are training here in Canada. Ultimately, these young men will be ordained to serve in the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface. In fact, two Vietnamese seminarians, Vincent Nguyen and Joseph Martin Pham, were ordained this spring to the transitional diaconate. In 2027, they will be ordained to the priesthood.
We want you to be a significant part of this future. Through your continued contribution to the Good Shepherd Campaign, you will have the happy privilege of knowing that you will have assisted them greatly over the years, as their formation as seminarians continues, and flourishes.
In fact, every year, their spiritual growth is quite tangible. The fruits of their life in the Spirit are seen in their deepening faith and dedication to their studies, as well as their work and witness in our parishes. These young men are shaping up to be fine priests for the Church of Saint Boniface. I know that as I, you look forward to the day they will be serving as priests in our parishes. Their presence and their varied gifts will no doubt become gifts in the various parishes where they will serve. We know that they will contribute significantly to the future life of the Church.
For each and every one of us, this is a great source of hope. To know that our communities of faith will be served by their opening up the Word of God, their offering of the Eucharist and indeed, all the sacraments, will be a deep comfort and inspiration to parents, children, teens and young adults, as well as grandparents and seniors. The faith that families strive in the Spirit to pass on will be strengthened and sustained by the presence of loving and dedicated young priests.
Because we know that committed priests do not live in the sanctuary. They contribute to the life of the Church on our church steps, in our parish halls, in catechism and RCIA classes, on our various parish committees, and in our homes and at the hospital. We know this because we have seen our recently ordained priests at youth retreats, washing dishes with the Knights of Columbus and other parish members, and in our homes as they visit and console the sick, or are present to those experiencing turmoil and pain. This year, we’ve even seen them moving the ball forward on the soccer field at the first annual Good Shepherd Cup.
Put simply, they are team players, leading us in prayer, offering the sacraments daily, on Sundays, and at key moments of our spiritual lives. They pass us the ball and keep us engaged in the beautiful game of life in the Faith, encouraging us to abide in Christ in our day-to-day journeys, joys and struggler as Catholics.
With such dedicated Good Shepherds, we can all hope today and tomorrow in our parish communities as they bring Christ’s Good News to us wherever we find ourselves, whether at Mass or out in the field, where we too are called to serve by our baptism.
Our seminarians are the future. And we can be a part of that future. The Good Shepherd Campaign
provides the financial support needed for all this, by helping them in their studies and assisting priests in their ongoing formation. All with the goal of supporting and sustaining the whole life of the Church. Through your support of their continuing formation, you are contributing to the future of our Church.
Yet when I reflect on the history of the Church here in Saint Boniface, I realize that our current efforts are part of an ongoing process. For instance, in the 1950s, 60s and early 70s, Archbishop Maurice Baudoux, along with fostering vocations from Manitoba, would also go to Quebec and New Brunswick to recruit seminarians who were then ordained here, going on to serve our parishes over many, many years. The past gives us the reason for doing this now in the present, with sure hope for the future. So, we continue the effort, seeking young men from here and abroad.
We have been greatly blessed since 2017. May our blessings continue as we all contribute to the Good Shepherd Campaign. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, continues to call, to guide, and to move us to embrace our diverse responses to our common baptismal vocation. With an eye for the future.
I ask you, dear faithful, to give generously to the Good Shepherd Campaign. Give... For The Life Of The Church.
With gratitude, in Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd,
Archbishop Albert LeGatt
