Diocesan Mass: Feast of the Immaculate Conception & Official Closure of Catholica 200

Diocesan Eucharistic Celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to honour our principal patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary and to mark the Official Closure of the Catholica 200 celebrations. Fr. Carl Tarnopolski, Vicar General, presided the Mass on Friday, December 7 at 7:30 PM, in the Saint Boniface Cathedral. Narration & Choir Song by France Levasseur-Ouimet

“Elles s’appelaient Marie” is a work of choral song and narrative in French by Franco-Albertan Marie-France Levasseur with musical arrangement by Allan Bevan. It is being presented by performers from the Franco-Manitoba community directed by Bruce Waldie on Friday November 16 at 7:30 pm at Saint Boniface Cathedral. It is part of “Catholica 200”, the yearlong celebration of the 200^th anniversary of the arrival in Manitoba of the Catholic mission to the West. Admission is free; a gift to the Flavie-Laurent Centre is appreciated*.

“Elles s’appelaient Marie” tells the story of Marie who leaves Quebec, the province of her birth and childhood, at the age of sixteen to follow her new husband into the West. She leaves her solid stone house to move into a sod house on the prairie and to live the difficult life of a pioneering woman in western Canada. This is, in effect, the history of all our mothers or grandmothers who came to establish themselves in the West, and all of these women had as one of their given names, the name Marie.

This work of narrative and song pays homage to all the pioneer women who suffered cold, tiredness and loneliness. It is retold here to keep their history alive.

Catholica 200 - Communal Feast

Archdiocesan Gala - new location & new format! This year, the Gala will take place on Tuesday, October 23, in the banquet hall of the St. Boniface Cathedral. Once again, there will be musical entertainment and a short program, but in lieu of serving a 4-course meal, the Feast will be comprised of food stations that will let you choose what to eat as well as let you decide if you want to be seated at a banquet table or mix and mingle to catch up with old friends or meet new ones! Celebrating One Church: Two Rites Together - Trilingual Byzantine Liturgy

All are welcome to this commemorative historical event celebrating the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface, the Redemptorist Fathers of the Yorkton Province and the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg. Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, Most Rev. Archbishop Albert LeGatt and Most Rev. Archbishop Richard Gagnon will be presiding at a Trilingual Byzantine Divine Liturgy, giving thanks for the milestones our Catholic Church has reached. This celebration will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018, 5 PM, at the Saint Boniface Cathedral.

The Divine Liturgy will be followed by a reception and program at 6:30 PM in the parish hall. Tickets for the reception are $30 and are available at the Archdiocesan Centre of Saint Boniface (204-237-9851), at the Archeparchy Chancery Office (204-228-7801)

Within the Old Walls of the St. Boniface Cathedral

2018 marks the 200^th anniversary of the establishment of the Catholic Church in western and northern Canada. Among the events highlighting this celebration is the play “1818” written by Rhéal Cenerini in French “Métchif” that provides a look at the history of the Catholic Church as seen through the eyes of an old Métis woman Élise. In her own words, she tells the story of her life, directly to the audience and to the young African priest who visits her. In doing so, she also touches upon the actions, the challenges and the sufferings associated
with the Church in Western Canada.

“1818” will be presented outside within the old walls of the Saint-Boniface Cathedral at 7:00 pm on July 20, 21, 22 and the following week on July 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29. The performance will be moved into the basement of the church as a rain back-up. Tickets are $15.00 and are available by calling (204) 233-ALLO(2556) or at the door.

The play was commissioned by the Archdiocese of St. Boniface and is one of a number of activities of Catholica 200 taking place throughout the year.

All are invited to a special evening Ecumenical Prayer Service with our sister Christian churches to celebrate this 200^th anniversary of the Catholic Church in Western Canada at the St. Boniface Cathedral, Friday, July 13 at 7:30 PM. This is a year to celebrate 200 years of faith and Christian community, committing ourselves anew to sharing the Good News of Jesus. It is also a time to give thanks for all that was light and to ask for forgiveness for all that was darkness, committing ourselves anew to true reconciliation
and unity, justice, harmony, compassion, inclusion, tolerance and peace.

Make Your History Come Alive!
Fundraising Luncheon – Tuesday, May 15, 2018

To mark the Centre du patrimoine’s 20th anniversary, the Société historique de Saint-Boniface invites you to a fundraising luncheon to be held from 12 noon to 1:30 PM on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at the Norwood Hotel (doors open at 11:30 AM.). The Centre du patrimoine will inaugurate the exhibition Étienne Gaboury’s Saint-Boniface Cathedral: Building Tomorrow’s Heritage organized on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Father Norbert Provencher’s arrival in the Red River Colony with two companions.

Proceeds from the luncheon will be used to buy and install mobile shelving to replace stationary shelving in the second-floor vault of the Centre du patrimoine, in order to significantly increase its storage capacity for archives collections. If the amount raised is greater than that required for the shelving, the surplus will be invested in the Centre du patrimoine Endowment Fund held by Francofonds.

Eastar: A Musical Rock Opera – Good Friday, March 30 & Saturday, March 31, 2018

Eastar, written by Shawn Coughlin brings to life the story of Jesus of Nazareth. It was performed by young Manitobans ages 12 - 30 years on Good Friday, March 30^th at 7 PM and Saturday, March 31^st at 2 PM in St. Mary’s Academy Alumnae Hall, 550 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg. Running time: 1 hour 15 minutes. This is the main youth-focused event of Catholica 200 - the celebration year of the 200^th anniversary of the arrival of the Catholic mission in Western Canada. Chrism Mass

Tuesday of Holy Week, March 27, 2018
at the St. Boniface Cathedral

This year, the Chrism Mass was celebrated on Tuesday of Holy Week, March 27^th, 7:30 PM at the St. Boniface Cathedral. The Mass had a particular emphasis on the celebration CATHOLICA 200, the bicentenary of the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church in Northern and Western Canada. All the faithful were invited to this diocesan celebration. Following the Chrism Mass, a time of fellowship will take place in the parish hall.

Concert with the WSO and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir – Friday, March 23, Saturday, March 24 & Sunday, March 25, 2018

As part of Catholica 200 celebrations (the bicentenary of the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church in Northern and Western Canada), the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir presented three concerts of sacred music at the St. Boniface Cathedral: Friday, March 23 at 8 PM; Saturday, March 24 at 8 PM and Sunday, March 25 at 2 PM. The concerts featured the works of Gabriel Fauré and Francis Poulenc. The Requiem Mass in D minor, op. 48 by Gabriel Fauré, is one of his most known, sung and played works. The Gloria is a composition by Francis Poulenc, one of his most popular sacred works with the Stabat Mater. Tickets on sale at: https://wso.ca/faure-and-poulenc/.

Assembly of Western and Northern Canadian Catholic Bishops: Mass to Celebrate the 200th Anniversary - Wednesday, February 28, 2018

25 bishops from throughout Western and Northern Canada came to mark the spread of the Gospel and life of the Church throughout our dioceses. A Eucharistic celebration was held on Wednesday, February 28 at 7:30 PM at the St. Boniface Cathedral and was presided by Most Reverend Albert LeGatt, Archbishop of Saint-Boniface; the homily was given by Most Reverend Richard Gagnon, Archbishop of Winnipeg. Numerous clergy, religious and laity came to celebrate the Eucharist and to visit in fellowship with the bishops after the Mass.
