ARCHDIOCESE OF SAINT BONIFACE (Manitoba)

Date Founded

Erected in the Red River Episcopal District (1820) North West Vicariate Apostolic (1845) Suffragan Diocese of Quebec (June 4, 1847) Metropolitan Seat on September 22, 1871.

Predecessors - Bishops

Mgr. Joseph Norbert Provencher  -  (1847-1853)
Mgr. Alexandre-Antonin Taché, o.m.i.  -  2nd bishop (1853-1871) and 1st archbishop (1871-1894)
Mgr Vital-Justin Grandin, o.m.i.  -  coadjutor "cum futura successione" (1857-1871); transferred to Saint Albert (1871-1902)
Mgr Louis-Philippe-Adélard Langevin, o.m.i.  -  3rd bishop, 2nd archbishop (1895-1915)
Mgr Arthur Béliveau  -  4th bishop, 3rd archbishop (1915-1995)

Constituency

The part of Manitoba within the following limits:

To the North. - The dividing line between Townships 44 and 45 in the Province of Manitoba, commencing at its intersection with an imaginary line that passes through the centre of Lake Winnipeg, and extending up to the interprovincial line that divides Manitoba and Ontario.

To the East. - The interprovincial line starting from the aforementioned point, up to its intersection with the international line dividing Canada and the United States.

To the South. - The international line, starting from the interprovincial line that divides Manitoba and Ontario, up to its intersection with the line that divides Ranges 13 and 14, West of the Principal Meridian.

To the West. - The line that divides Ranges 13 and 14 up to its intersection with the line that divides Townships 9 and 10. From which the dividing line of said Townships 9 and 10 up to its intersection with the imaginary line passing through the centre of the Red River, thence up to the mouth, and from the centre of Lake Winnipeg up to the starting point.
